About 100+ residents gathered in the Club House to watch the Kentucky Derby on the big screen TV. Everyone arrived early to partake in “mint tulips” and Honeycured Ham box lunches. There was ample time with pre-race festivities to place bets on your personal favorite to win the 145th Derby at Churchill Downs. The weather at the track was rainy and wet creating a muddy track and influencing some bets for the “mudders”.
Well, for the first time in the history of the Kentucky Derby, the winner of the race did not finish first. Maximum Security, sent off as the tepid top choice at 9-2, bolted to the early lead and held it all the way to the wire, seemingly winning the 145th run for the roses, finishing a few lengths ahead of longshot Country House. However, an objection was immediately filed after the race, claiming Maximum Security impeded the run of other horses.
The scene at the Club House was as surreal as it was at Churchill Downs as the three stewards examined footage for more than 15 minutes, with many Monterey residents having bet on Maximum Security expecting to reap their reward. Alas, Maximum Security’s win would be vacated and Country House (at 65-1) declared the winner. And wouldn’t you know it, only one resident had selected Country House to win – and took home the entire bet pool!
