Second Time Around Sale 2020

Who knows when the tradition started? It’s an annual event that has become a part of Monterey culture that provides excitement, camaraderie, mystery, discovery, and a little income to support Monterey activities. The first Saturday of February is a day you can count on.

First comes weeks of collection. Everybody can contribute! It’s the stuff you no longer use or need that can strike somebody else’s fancy. It all piles up and becomes merchandise! Appliances, furniture, kitchenware, clothing, lamps, books and games, and, of course, the “White Elephant” table.

Despite the rain there was a great turn out, from residents and neighbors. Then it’s all over for another year, while Monterey is and the residents are enriched in ways that cannot be calculated and will not be soon forgotten.

Dancing Under the Stars – 2020

For the first dance of our 50th Anniversary, despite the chill, everyone gathered in Club House parking lot for karaoke and fun. There were many brave souls up got up to sing solo as well as several groups of singers. Everyone was free to pick their classic favorites. Music for singing and dancing as well was provided by DJ Bryce of “Be a Star.” Bryce could not be kept off the dance floor himself much to the pleasure of the crowd. Let’s do it again, hopefully when the weather is a little nicer.

Hope Rural School visits Monterey

On the morning of December 3rd, the Monterey Yacht Club was invaded by about twenty little kindergartens all dressed in unique holiday costumes Accompanied by their teachers from the Hope Rural School, the kindergarteners proceeded to sing a collection of songs with appropriate gestures to the delight of the Monterey audience.

The children’s visit, an annual event, started 20 years ago by Ann Burns who was present for this anniversary occasion. Of course, we had a surprise visit from Santa Claus, who just happened to have a bag of presents to distribute, as he chatted with the children one by one following their musical performance.

Refreshments, home-baked Christmas goodies provided by some of Monterey’s most talented bakers, are also a regular feature, and those in attendance did not hesitate to join in the line going down the table, attended by servers in red shirts, to spark up their coffee with cookies and cake.

Altogether this occasion kicks off the holiday season in a joyous, lighthearted manner to the great delight of the Monterey community.

Veteran’s Day Celebration at Monterey, 2019

On the afternoon of November 10, 2019, Monterey residents and more than 30 veterans gathered at the Memorial Walkway and Garden adjacent to the flagpole to pay tribute to our nation and the veterans among them who had fought and served their country in war and peace. We honor those men and women who have served our country so nobly. In fulfilling their oath, even in the seemingly mundane tasks, our service members ensure the continuation of this great American experiment in self-government.

The crowd stood to pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, which was at half-mast in honor of Veterans Day. A wreath of red, white, and blue was mounted on a stand behind the speakers table, which contained a plaque “what is a veteran?” Veterans of the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Marine Corp., the Coast Guard/Merchant Marine and National Guard were invited to light a candle in honor that service.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, as voices joined for “God Bless America,” reflecting Monterey’s pride, respect, and love of country – a brief and satisfying reflection of patriotism to be long remembered. May we all strive to be faithful in our everyday responsibilities as our veterans have been in theirs.

Monterey Halloween 2019

It was pretty “spooky” at the Monterey Yacht Club with a collection of wizards, witches, clowns, and a mad doctor creating quite an atmosphere.  All the costuming across the board were outstanding. How can you beat Cesar & Cleopatra, the Joker & Princess, and various clowns and flappers?

The annual standby, “Glad to Be an American!” was brought into play early in the evening, and the parade with the American flag created a heartfelt exhibit of the greatest generation’s love of country. Of course, no real party would be complete without a solo by you-know-who, this time presenting “I’m not the Same.” If you want fun and excitement, try this:  a contest among two couples wrapping their partners up like mummies – in toilet paper. And experience won again this year.
