Veteran’s Day Celebration at Monterey, 2019

MYACC Vet’s Day 2019

On the afternoon of November 10, 2019, Monterey residents and more than 30 veterans gathered at the Memorial Walkway and Garden adjacent to the flagpole to pay tribute to our nation and the veterans among them who had fought and served their country in war and peace. We honor those men and women who have served our country so nobly. In fulfilling their oath, even in the seemingly mundane tasks, our service members ensure the continuation of this great American experiment in self-government.

The crowd stood to pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, which was at half-mast in honor of Veterans Day. A wreath of red, white, and blue was mounted on a stand behind the speakers table, which contained a plaque “what is a veteran?” Veterans of the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Marine Corp., the Coast Guard/Merchant Marine and National Guard were invited to light a candle in honor that service.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, as voices joined for "God Bless America," reflecting Monterey's pride, respect, and love of country - a brief and satisfying reflection of patriotism to be long remembered. May we all strive to be faithful in our everyday responsibilities as our veterans have been in theirs.

Monterey Halloween 2019

Monterey Halloween 2019

It was pretty “spooky” at the Monterey Yacht Club with a collection of wizards, witches, clowns, and a mad doctor creating quite an atmosphere.  All the costuming across the board were outstanding. How can you beat Cesar & Cleopatra, the Joker & Princess, and various clowns and flappers?

The annual standby, "Glad to Be an American!" was brought into play early in the evening, and the parade with the American flag created a heartfelt exhibit of the greatest generation's love of country. Of course, no real party would be complete without a solo by you-know-who, this time presenting "I'm not the Same." If you want fun and excitement, try this:  a contest among two couples wrapping their partners up like mummies - in toilet paper. And experience won again this year.

Reconstruction of the 4th Hole Pond

The long-awaited reconstruction of the 4th hole pond is moving along very nicely. We are sure everyone will be as pleased with the results, just as we were with the 5th hole pond reconstruction.

Derby Day at Monterey 2019

Derby Day 2019

About 100+ residents gathered in the Club House to watch the Kentucky Derby on the big screen TV. Everyone arrived early to partake in “mint tulips” and Honeycured Ham box lunches. There was ample time with pre-race festivities to place bets on your personal favorite to win the 145th Derby at Churchill Downs. The weather at the track was rainy and wet creating a muddy track and influencing some bets for the “mudders”.

Well, for the first time in the history of the Kentucky Derby, the winner of the race did not finish first. Maximum Security, sent off as the tepid top choice at 9-2, bolted to the early lead and held it all the way to the wire, seemingly winning the 145th run for the roses, finishing a few lengths ahead of longshot Country House. However, an objection was immediately filed after the race, claiming Maximum Security impeded the run of other horses.

The scene at the Club House was as surreal as it was at Churchill Downs as the three stewards examined footage for more than 15 minutes, with many Monterey residents having bet on Maximum Security expecting to reap their reward. Alas, Maximum Security’s win would be vacated and Country House (at 65-1) declared the winner. And wouldn’t you know it, only one resident had selected Country House to win – and took home the entire bet pool!
