Derby Day at Monterey 2019

About 100+ residents gathered in the Club House to watch the Kentucky Derby on the big screen TV. Everyone arrived early to partake in “mint tulips” and Honeycured Ham box lunches. There was ample time with pre-race festivities to place bets on your personal favorite to win the 145th Derby at Churchill Downs. The weather at the track was rainy and wet creating a muddy track and influencing some bets for the “mudders”.

Well, for the first time in the history of the Kentucky Derby, the winner of the race did not finish first. Maximum Security, sent off as the tepid top choice at 9-2, bolted to the early lead and held it all the way to the wire, seemingly winning the 145th run for the roses, finishing a few lengths ahead of longshot Country House. However, an objection was immediately filed after the race, claiming Maximum Security impeded the run of other horses.

The scene at the Club House was as surreal as it was at Churchill Downs as the three stewards examined footage for more than 15 minutes, with many Monterey residents having bet on Maximum Security expecting to reap their reward. Alas, Maximum Security’s win would be vacated and Country House (at 65-1) declared the winner. And wouldn’t you know it, only one resident had selected Country House to win – and took home the entire bet pool!

Annual Fun Day at Monterey 2019

Nine bikes escorted by two motorcycles got Fun Day off to an early start proceeding up and down the side streets of Monterey for early morning exercise.  A coffee break at the Club House was a welcome diversion thereafter. Now that everyone was awake, the streets picked up traffic heading to designated apartments for the annual treat of touring two of Monterey’s most alluring households.

Then everyone headed to the ever popular “Dunk a Director” where our good-natured Directors subjected themselves to a good-natured soaking by accurately pitched tennis balls.

Early afternoon brought a nice lunch under the canopy followed by a medley of golfing contests, from driving to putting to attempts at “hole in one” and plenty of circulating golfers kept things moving. The “ball drop” attracted the usual big crowd on Hole #5.

Altogether another successful, well-planned Fun Day at Monterey.

St Patrick’s Day at Monterey 2019

St. Pat's at Monterey

Live music and a truly scrumptious sandwiches go a long way toward cementing a reputation for the organizers of Monterey’s Saint Patrick’s Day, the one occasion that will never lose its stunning appeal for our residents. It was celebrated in high style on its own special day on the calendar – March 15th.

Green, of course, was the color of choice, and shamrocks, the shape of the moment, as the crowd filtered into the Yacht Club at the beginning of the evening. And what a crowd it was! The live music of crowd favorites the Sophisticats, mixing Irish music with conventional dance numbers to set a tone for the evening’s fare and found a most receptive audience on the dance floor. The sunset that evening was not one of the most spectacular, but what does it matter? Party goers enjoyed the newly laid Yacht Club patio and took advantage of our warm Florida evening.

Mardi Gras at Monterey 2019

The Mardi Gras party was everybody’s idea of a good time, and just leave it to the Ludmerer’s to keep things musically moving by bringing in Doug Deming and The Jewel Tones band to get everyone up and dancing! And dancing was the rule of the evening. There were plenty of costumes with hats, masks and beads – with best costume resulting in a tie for Tom and Kim.

By the end everybody was exhausted! At the proper time next year, they’ll all be back.

2019 Monterey Fashion Show

A busy buffet table offering a pleasing variety of sandwiches topped off with nothing less than Mimosas and followed by pastries was just the front runner for a well-attended Sunday afternoon Style Show that is an annual event at Monterey.

The trick is in the composition and presentation, inasmuch as the models, five women and two men, are all residents with no previous modeling experience. Each ventured down the aisle for their many appearances, wearing outfits chosen by the models themselves from the newest seasonal stock of a local department store. Except for guidance by an experienced store representative, and multitudes of garments and accessories from which to select, the home-grown show brought a charming fresh slant on fashion and enjoyed plenty of audience support and encouragement.

2019 Reverse Raffle Dance

Another sold-out party with every seat taken at the Yacht Club with Monterey fun makers on a Wednesday night.

The evening began with the tricky gimmick of a “Reverse Raffle” during which each person had a ticket, and having your number called disqualified you from winning a prize. There was a cash prize for every 25th number called and later the good stuff came along with five nice prizes, including a manicure certificate, and a great party basket. Of course, everyone craved the grand prize of a month’s free maintenance!

There were great snacks at each table, with Klondike bars for desert. The heart of the evening, though, was the music – all the pieces everyone loves and wants to dance to – and just the pleasure of being with our Monterey friends.

Dancing Under the Stars – 2019 plus

Burr, it was so cold we had to move the dancing and karaoke indoors. BYOB was supplemented with a common buffet of goodies to snack on. There were many brave souls up got up to sing solo as well as several groups of singers. Everyone was free to pick their classic favorites. Music for singing and dancing as well was provided by DJ’s Bryce & Shar of “Be a Star”. Bryce could not be kept off the dance floor to the pleasure of the crowd. Let’s do it again, hopefully when the weather is nicer.

Hope Rural School Visits Monterey

On the morning of December 4th, the Monterey Yacht Club was invaded by twenty little reindeer, complete with antlers. The kindergarteners proceeded to sing a collection of songs with appropriate gestures to the delight of everyone in the Monterey audience.

The children’s annual visit was accompanied by a visit from Santa Claus, who just happened to have a big bag of presents to distribute, as he chatted with the children one by one following their musical performance.

Refreshments of home-baked Christmas goodies provided by some of Monterey’s most talented bakers, are also a regular feature, and those in attendance did not hesitate to join in the line going down the table, attended by servers in red shirts, to spark up their coffee with cookies and cake.

Altogether this occasion kicks off the holiday season in a joyous, lighthearted manner to the great delight of the Monterey community.

Rockin’ Through The Ages 2018

With the Sophisticats supplying a wide variety of music you couldn’t keep people off the dance floor. The program was a winner with the crowd, who, after all, had come to the Yacht Club to dance and have a good time with friends. Rather than everyone having their own treats on individual tables, the organizers set up a buffet style table so that everyone could sample all the goodies brought to the party.

Altogether, it was a party full of surprises and the good-natured fun of being with Monterey’s finest movers and shakers, while the music measured up to everybody’s expectations.
